Don’t Take the Weather with You: Tips for Enjoying a Warmer Climate
When it comes to winter holidays abroad, us Brits are already there. We adore leaving the wet, cold, flood-riddled English weather behind for a week or two and venturing out to warmer destinations where we can pull out our little-used beach blankets and sun cream. With such a dramatic change in climates, however, sometimes it’s a good idea to do as the locals do.
Adjust Your Diet
You’ll find that, in hotter countries, eating a big meal morning, afternoon and evening just isn’t possible; your body won’t be able to handle the sheer amount of food in the heat. Take a look at what the locals are doing. Lunch tends to be a light affair of salads, fruit and snacks, enough to keep them ticking over without making themselves ill. In our previous blogs we’ve listed a couple of scrummy foods you simply have to try such as Must Try Foods in Mallorca and Must Try Foods from Menorca.
Another important thing to consider when eating abroad is the effect the hot weather will have on your food. Take care how you store food and drinks, especially if you plan on travelling anywhere, what may be good to eat in the morning might have gone off by the afternoon if not stored properly.
Wear Loose Clothing
One of the musts when lounging around in a warm climate is to wear cool, loose fitting clothing. Tight clothes will restrict your movements and keep your body heat trapped between your skin and your clothing. This will only make you feel hotter and put you at risk of heat exhaustion.
Light, loose fitting clothing allows air to flow freely between your skin and your clothes. One trick to see whether your favourite T-shirt or trousers are thin enough is to hold them up to the light. If you can see the outline of an object through the material, your clothes are perfectly suitable to keep you nice and cool during a hot spell.
Let Yourself Acclimatise
Many people simply can’t wait to run off and explore their holiday destination. Sightseeing and adventures might have been planned for day one but just take a second to relax. Everybody adjusts differently to different climates and you’re much more likely to enjoy your holiday abroad once your body has gotten used to the heat.
On your first and even second day, take time to wander through streets of your nearest town or village. Enjoy your luxury villas in Menorca, Mallorca, Kefalonia, Sardinia, Sicily or Zante and relax with a glass of wine in the evening before you begin your action packed adventure.
