Menorca Villas
Menorca is one of Spain’s most beautiful Balearic islands, less well-known and much quieter than her sister islands Ibiza and Mallorca. The name Menorca (or Minorca) is derived from Latin ‘Insula Minor’ – smaller island – in comparison to Mallorca; it is only a third of its neighbour’s size, with a mere 220km circumference. It takes just 45 minutes to cross the whole length of Menorca from its charming capital Mahon, situated in the East of the island, to the beautiful old capital Ciutadella on its West coast.
Menorca is the most easterly of the four main Balearic islands in the archipelago, it is largely uninhabited and feels tranquil and unspoilt, and therefore perfect for a relaxing villa holiday. Menorca is a truly unique island and was declared a UNESCO ‘biosphere reserve‘ in 1993, in recognition of the high level of compatibility achieved between the conservation of its rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage, and the economic and social development of its communities.
In 2011 the renovation of Menorca’s ancient Cami de Cavalls (“Horse Path”) was completed, and it is now again possible to walk, cycle or ride the entire 186 kms around the island in manageable sections. The origin and name of this famous hiking trail most probably go back to the 14th century, when the knights of Menorca were required to patrol the coast on horseback to help defend the island. Walking the Camí de Cavalls path is arguably the best way to experience all aspects of Menorca, its wonderful landscape, flavoursome cuisine, colourful culture and ancient history. You can easily access sections of this path from our beautiful villas in Menorca, which are situated close to the trail.
The island is also well known for its very early prehistoric human activity and some of Menorca’s earliest cultural heritage is believed to have been influenced by other Mediterranean civilisations. Some experts suggest the first seafaring people to arrive on Menorca were of the eastern Mediterranean, such as the Minoans from the island of Crete.
