Fornells Villas
Set on the north east coast of Menorca, the traditional white-washed former fishing village of Fornells is a delightful quiet area in which to base a villa holiday on the island. The village retains a traditional atmosphere and lobster-fishermen in their traditional llauts still fill the harbour, bringing their catch in for the local speciality lobster stew. Mainly residential with plenty of amenities, Fornells attracts the more independently minded travellers.
Centred around the pretty tree-lined harbour, Fornells is home to many cafes and fish & seafood restaurants, all enjoying the wonderful views across the harbour and the sparkling blue sea. The square is a lovely spot to relax with coffee and soak up the atmosphere. During Summer the harbourside hosts a weekly night market, and with a handful of boutiques, gift shops, two mini-markets and a bank, the village has all the basics. Es Mercadal and Mahon are not far if you wish to hit the shops or nightlife.
Visitors to Menorca will find a range of popular sail-based water pursuits on offer and Fornells is one of the best locations for this. Sitting at the entrance to a natural bay, which is a huge 5km long and 2km across, the sea here is sheltered and ideal for anyone wishing to try their hand at some sailing, windsurfing or kayaking for the first time.
At the centre of Fornells a small strip of beach is inviting for a paddle, but head out along the coast or across the bay to discover numerous small virgin coves with soft sand and lapping waves. West of Fornells are the beautiful Cavalleria, Bini mel la and Pregonda, or for beaches with amenities try Cala Tirant or Arenal Son Saura.
A reminder of the sometimes turbulent past of these islands, the magnificent and best-preserved watchtower on the island perches above Fornells. The castle of Sant Antoni is also nearby and worth exploring. As of course is the coastline, whether on foot along the scenic coastal paths, or by Water Taxi stopping off at hidden gems and secluded beaches.
For those seeking peace and quiet, great food, beautiful natural surroundings, the draw of the sea and the opportunity to soak up the authentic Menorca, a villa holiday in Fornells really fits the bill.
