Mallorca

Hill Walking and Cycling
Mallorca is famous as a spring destination for cyclists, hikers, runners and other ‘outdoor enthusiasts’, with the spectacular Serra de Tramuntana mountain range affording literally ‘breathtaking’ challenges.
The iconic Sa Calobra climb with a 7% average gradient from sea level to an elevation of 682 m, is known for its countless hairpin turns, but above all for its dramatic scenery. Cap de Formentor offers cycling and hikes with stunning cliffside views, a climb to the lighthouse and accessible trails along the peninsula.
Beach walkers and runners on the other hand, enjoy the 8km stretch of between Port d’Alcúdia and Can Picafort, with the shimmering turquoise waters always close by, tempting with a refreshing dip.
In early May, Alcúdia comes alive with the Zafiro IRONMAN, one of Europe’s famous early-season half-distance triathlons. Athletes fro all over the world take on a 1.9 km swim in the crystal-clear waters of Alcúdia Bay, a scenic 90 km ride through Mallorca’s rolling hills, and a 21 km coastal run. The event draws elite triathletes from around the world and fills the entire region with a festival-like atmosphere.

Art & Spring Festivals
Sa Bassa Foundation in spring isn’t just a museum trip, – although the art collection is of the finest and the sculpture park truly impressive! It’s a gentle immersion in beauty, nature and subtle contrasts. A visit feels like a mini-escape from time, as the estate comes alive with birdsong and the scent of fragrant herbs and blossoms.
In Mallorca, the arrival of the new season is celebrated with colourful markets and local celebrations, and Pollença hosts the vibrant Fira del Vi, a popular wine fair in early May. In Alcùdia, international performers entertain the audience at Circaire, a contemporary circus festival and the major highlight of the spring season, transforming the town into a vibrant, open-air stage. Watch the audience hold its breath during thrilling aerial acts, only to burst into laughter as performances merge storytelling, circus skills, and physical comedy.
For nature enthusiasts, springtime at S’Albufera Natural Park near Playa de Muro and Santa Margalida is nothing short of spectacular. As the new season arrives, this vast wetland reserve, a sanctuary for birdlife, transforms into a living tapestry of colour amidst the dunes, marshes and pine groves. Follow the park’s paths on foot or by bike for an up close experience of nature awakening.
Crete

The scent of wild Oregano and Thyme, and the hike of a lifetime
Spring is when Crete is at its most spectacular. The island’s rugged mountains and fertile valleys burst into vibrant colour, showcasing flowering mountain herbs, scarlet poppies, wild orchids and purple cyclamen, while the last snow clings to the tops of the Lefka Ori mountains. The air is warm and fragrant with thyme and citrus blossoms and the atmosphere friendly and welcoming in these weeks leading up to summer. Tables and chairs are moved outside into the sunshine and in the villages, kafenions greet visitors with their doors wide open. Now is the time to sample the seasonal cuisine, like wild greens, stuffed courgette flowers and artichoke stews with (or without?) snails.
As May brings ideal hiking weather, comfortably warm but without the sweltering summer sun, the famous Samaria Gorge opens, with its river filled by freshly melted snow and the gorge at its most verdant and beautiful. Spring’s mild temperatures make the 16 km descent exhilarating rather than draining, with a start high in the White Mountains at Xyloskalo, where a steep plunge leads into the heart of the gorge. At this time of the year the river roars, a constant soundtrack as you follow its path, as the scenery changes and one moves deeper past the deserted village of Samaria and through ancient cypress and pine trees. At the iconic Iron Gates the walls of the gorge narrow to just a few metres while rising dramatically overhead, – a thrilling finish to one of Europe’s most legendary hikes.
If you like the idea of walking a gorge but prefer a less strenuous option, Imbros Gorge, Topolia or Agia Irini feature lovely trails, great rock formations and endemic spring flora. Look out for the the many wild orchids, such as the Ophrys cretica, and the stunning deep purple Dragon Arum thriving between the rocks of Imbros gorge, – its distinctly foul odour when in bloom, means you might be able to follow your nose to find it.

Cultural Highlights – Knossos and the Old Town of Chania
Spring is also the ideal season to visit the Palace of Knossos, when mild temperatures and fewer visitors make exploring this vast open site, which offers little shade from the sun, much more comfortable. As the heart of the ancient Minoan civilisation, Knossos is steeped in mythology and architectural splendour, with remains of expansive courtyards and reconstructed frescoes.
Visiting Crete in spring allows you to comfortably wander around the site, taking in the intricate details and immense scale of Europe’s oldest city state. Lush greenery and bursts of wildflowers frame the ancient ruins, enhancing the atmosphere of the site, inviting you to linger for hours.

Beyond Knossos..
..spring is perfect for exploring the historic heart of Chania. The Venetian Harbour is filled with a tranquil energy, and yet there is a feeling of fresh vitality after the winter months. The mild, sun-drenched days are perfect for wandering through the labyrinth of the old town, where the narrow alleyways reveal hidden courtyards, and fragrant jasmine and honeysuckle trails from ancient stone walls.
Discover the architecture and charm of the old Turkish and Jewish neighbourhoods, visit Kastelli Hill and the archaeological excavation site of ancient Kydonia, explore the old tanneries of the Tabakaria, the lighthouse, built under Egyptian rule, and the beautifully restored arsenals, – then pick one of the many attractive waterside cafes or bars… and simply enjoy the atmosphere!
