The area of Koukounara is a sleepy rural location, off the beaten track in north-west Crete. Whilst the sparkling sea fringed by a choice of fabulous beaches is just a short drive away, the area offers a picturesque relaxing retreat to base your villa holiday in. Taking in the tucked away villages, patchwork of almond & olive groves backed by the rugged mountains and the sea on the horizon, you will have a real sense of stepping into the authentic Crete.
A traditional taverna offering a simple menu can be found in the nearby village of Rotonda. Perhaps plan this into a circular walk in the area, which will reward you with spectacular views for miles around.
Wind your way down to Kissamos Bay, around 10kms drive, for a dip in the sparkling sea, boat trips to Balos, shopping and tavernas. Kissamos town is a bustling little port & fishing harbour with some interesting archaeological finds and a lovely spot to while away a morning. The beaches along the coastline here include some almost-deserted beaches where you will find peace & quiet and crystal-clear waters lapping on golden sands – try Viglia, Drapanias and Livadia. Around 45 minutes drive from Koukounara is the stunning Chania, bursting with character and history. Chania is well known for its Venetian harbour, inviting streets and plethora of tavernas & shops.
For those that like to be secluded & quiet and yet close to amenities when wanted, the Koukounara area offers a great choice for a villa holiday in north-west Crete.
