Almyrida and Plaka and the surrounding areas
The rolling hillsides in this area of Apokoronas are some of the most beautiful in Crete and a walkers’ paradise; the area is criss-crossed with footpaths that connect a number of attractive little villages, such as Gavalohori and Armeni, Stylos and Kalyves, and there are several books and online sites describing the various walks.
When exploring the Apokoronas region, Tzompanakis Glass Blowing Factory, just 10 minutes drive from Almyrida, is an interesting stop. Here, beautiful vessels and decorative items have been created from recycled glass for many decades. The fascinating process can usually be observed in action between 8am and 3pm, and there is also a studio full of unique hand crafted glass treasures to admire (or purchase).
Less than 25 minutes from Plaka, on the hills of Megala Chorafia, you will find the impressive Archeological Site of Aptera, overlooking Souda Bay; a jaw dropping historical site which features – amongst other excavations – a Minoan vaulted tomb, a Roman amphitheater and baths from the 1st and 2nd century, and an imposing 19th century fortress. Built during the Ottoman reign to try and suppress the Cretan revolution, it still stands proudly, dominating the hillside.
In Greek mythology, the ancient city of Aptera (which translates as ‘without wings’) was believed to be the site of the famed singing contest between Sirens and Muses. According to legend, the Sirens, when defeated, shed their feathered wings in sorrow and cast themselves off the cliff into the sea.
Next to the various carefully preserved sites and artefacts around Aptera are QR codes for vistors to scan for detailed information and to explore at their own pace while admiring the dramatic views over the bay.
For a delightful day out, why not take a trip to the idyllic Lake Kournas around 30 min drive away, – the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery. This is a true oasis in the middle of the Apokoronas region, where you can take a relaxing dip in the calm, crystal clear water, spot fish and turtles while snorkeling, or hire a pedalo (you can even get the ones with slides for the kids!) Hydrobikes and small electric boats are also available to rent, or just take a walk around the lake. There are several waterside tavernas serving traditional Greek food and refreshing drinks with lovely views over the lake.
Those looking for a day in verdant surroundings away from the coast, (particularly on a hot day), may want to visit the cooling springs and waterfalls of Argyroupoli on the edge of Apokronas, a charming village in the foothills of the White mountains, where streams and babbling brooks flow through the hills. The village was erected on the site of the ancient city of Lappa, once a powerful Cretan municipality. Remains from later civilisations, such as Roman mosaic floors, can still be spotted in the area.
The springs have been somewhat ‘tamed’ over the years, so don’t expect huge natural waterfalls, but this is a wonderfully fresh spot for lunch at one of the many excellent tavernas under the dense, shady canopies of tall trees, with the water around you providing a refreshing environment and relaxing soundtrack to your meal. Alternatively, you can pick up some sweet and savoury treats for a picnic by the streams from one of the great bakeries in the village and fill your bottle with the cold water that originates from a spring in a cave beneath the chapel of Agia Domani.
