Gavalohori Villas

The idyllic village of Gavalohori (Gavalochori) in the centre of the scenic Apokoronou region in Western Crete, is positioned at the end of a green wooded valley leading down to the sea and the bay at Almyrida, just 25 mins drive from Chania.

Dotted around the small village square in the centre are some little shops and 2 old kafenions, originally frequented only by the male population, – who would sip coffee and debate politics whilst desultorily twirling their worry beads. Nowadays, one of the kafeneions serves delicious mezè (small plates) while the other one has become a popular taverna with a full menu. Guests staying at our villas in Gavalochori and Agios Pavlos therefore now have the opportunity to wine and dine locally and then stroll home under the starry Cretan night sky.

Gavalochori Travel Guide

The village  is said to have been named after the Gavalas family, i.e. the ‘village of Gavalas’. It is believed that it was established when Alexios Komnenos, the Byzantine emperor in Constantinople, sent 12 noble men to Crete at the turn of the 12th century. They were accompanied by settlers and soldiers with the aim to suppress an uprising by the native Cretans against the emperor.

Gavalochori has been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a ‘historically preserved place with a landscape of particular natural beauty’. As you walk through the cobbled streets, admiring the quaint 500 year old stone buildings and the beautiful bougainvillea, make sure to also visit the Historical & Folklore Museum of Gavalochori.

This interesting ethnographic museum, set in a charming traditional Cretan house, will take you on a journey through time and teach you about the local craftsmanship, art, culture and traditions. Amongst other treasures, there are historical weapons, such as swords and guns, on display, as well as embroidered dresses, handmade furniture and old icons. An English guide is usually available to take you around the house and treat you to lots of detailed information about the exhibits.

The village also boasts no fewer than 12 churches within a short walk from the main square, all of which are still in use and often host local festivals, – but for another dose of local history, why not check out the Pre-industrial Olive Mill, built in the 17th century. Carefully restored since, it provides information, in both Greek and English, detailing the history of the mill and olive oil production in the area.

Other places to visit in the area:

  • Tsivaras

In the small hamlet of Tsivaras you will find the Mellisakis Olive Mill, set amongst sprawling olive groves. The family business, which has been active since the 1890s, now offers free tours. One can explore the plant, learn the oil making process and try the different flavours of olive oil. During the harvesting season, one can also watch the entire extraction process.

  • Xirosterni – Distillery and Farm

The tiny village of Xirosterni is a peaceful hidden gem and still untouched by tourism. There are a couple of interesting places to visit, such as the Peroulakis Distillery, where you can take a guided tour of the factory and discover how Raki (Crete’s version of ‘grappa’) is produced, watching the entire process from preparation to bottling, even enjoying some samples of the final product. In Xirosterni you will also find Cretan Gea, a beautiful farmhouse surrounded by olive groves – including an over 1000 years old tree – where cooking, cheese making and pottery workshops are held and olive oil, wine tours and a Cretan honey experience are offered.

The experience includes a visit of the apiary, honey tasting and a beeswax candle making workshop.

  • Lake Kournas

For a delightful day out, why not take a trip to the idyllic Lake Kournas around 30 min drive away, – the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery. This is a true oasis in the middle of the Apokoronas region, where you can take a relaxing dip in the calm, crystal clear water, spot fish and turtles while snorkeling, hire a pedalo (you can even get the ones with slides for the kids), hydrobike or small electric boat or just take a walk around the lake. There are several waterside tavernas serving traditional Greek food and refreshing drinks with lovely views over the lake.

  • Omoprogialos Beach

Just a 15 minute drive from our villas is the Omoprogialos beach, a breathtaking quiet bay set off the beaten track, perfect for diving and exploring the local marine life, or just for a refreshing dip in these spectacularly clear waters. This is a real undiscovered gem and although there isn’t a designated beach area, there is plenty of space on the rocks to relax and sunbathe. If you fancy a bite to eat or a bit of shade, there is a traditional taverna next door, which is known for its fresh seafood and scenic beach views.

  • Georgioupolis

The nearby village of Georgioupolis is definitely worth a visit, only a 25 minutes drive away. This charming yet lively village boasts an incredible sandy beach, stretching for over 10 km to the east, lined with traditional sea view tavernas and bars, with sunbeds and umbrellas available to hire.

One of the places to visit close to the town itself is Saint Nicholas Chapel, named after and dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. It is set on a tiny island off Georgioupolis, connected by a small rocky footpath.
Next to the quaint harbour, from where you can take a variety of boat tours such as dolphin spotting, island hopping etc, is the famous ‘Turtle River’. You can hire a canoe or a pedalo to watch the turtles in the clear blue water and enjoy the surrounding flora.

  • Vrysses

In the charming village of Vrysses the river Boutakas runs through the centre, flowing under the Kamara Bridge, which dates back to the Hellenistic period. There are tavernas and cafes near the river where one can indulge in the famous local yoghurt and cheese.

Gavalohori & Agios Pavlos

Many of the houses in Gavalochori are 300 – 500 years old and have been sympathetically renovated in traditional style, which gives the village a pleasant air of both original rustic charm and prosperity. After just a few days you will find it easy to imagine living here all year round and blending into the local lifestyle.

To this day, it is a working agricultural village, with well-preserved folk architecture of historical interest, which has enjoyed something of a renaissance over the past 10 years. Apart from its 2 excellent tavernas and the ‘mezepoleio’ (similar to a Cretan tapas bar), it now also boasts a bakery, 2 mini-markets, 2 shops selling local crafts such as pottery, jewellery, cards, prints, and other handmade items from Greece, a local taxi company and a hair and beauty salon.

There is a successful local women’s co-operative that has been making silk bobbin lace (known as ‘kopaneli’) from the early 20th century onwards, originally using silk which until the 1950s was produced in Crete. Some of the work can be seen in the local Folklore museum in the centre of the village.

This villa is highly recommended if you want a premium experience. A beautiful place, private location with incredible views. A car is an absolute necessity as the location is pretty remote. But the drive is so worth it. The whole place enables you to feel relaxed in a place that shouts 5 STAR! We have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful places across Spain, France, Portugal and other parts of Europe, and we can say this Villa is right up there with the very best. We will definitely return in the near future, it really was that good! Communication from the management company was excellent before, during and after our visit. A very nice welcome pack was very much appreciated on arrival, (which is all to scarce these days). Be mindful that WiFi is not fantastic, so don’t expect to be able to stream movies or download films. But that is a very minor issue when on holiday in this truly beautiful place. The easiest 5 stars we’ve ever given.

To describe the house as amazing doesn´t feel enough. Such a wonderful view, the pool is great, no close neighbors and the house is nicely renovated. 5 minutes to the sea with car and walking distance to good local restaurants and a mini market. Clean and nice inside. We are a family with two kids and it was plenty of space. Great host, easy to commuicate with and really service minded.

The location & views are breathtaking. The Villa is clean and there is lots of room both inside and out. We didn’t meet the owner or the agent, but everything ran smoothly and communication was easy and responses were quick. The nearby beaches are spectacular and anyone who enjoys sea swimming is in for a treat. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely time in the villa! Check-in was straightforward, the villa was very clean and we loved the view from the outdoor seating and pool area. The location was great; in close proximity to the village of Spartia, and yet still quiet and private. We also tried one of the local tavernas which we found in the Freelance Villas handbook, which was great, too!

I was simply amazed by Diane, Sylvia and the team in Crete They saved our holiday not once, but twice. Unannounced construction works started right next to the villa we booked, which they quickly resolved by moving us to another villa, all very smoothly. And then we couldn’t blame anyone but ourselves for forgetting to take two things from the house (one of which our passports, which we discovered on the morning of departure!) and without any judgment and with total patience and understanding, they arranged that we could pick those up twice (in case of the passports, at 7.00 in the morning!). In general, they were very responsive whatever the question, whether important or trivial. Information before arrival is perfect; they ensure you have all the info about the accommodation and surroundings you need in a comprehensive guide/app. How they manage their service is just so smart and they are a very service-minded team of people themselves, and I’m entirely grateful to them - and will always book via Freelance Villas on any next trip to Crete!

Such a stunning position with breathtaking views all around! Beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoor space. We were there in the heat of August so it was too hot to walk to the closest village for tavernas and mini mart, but in cooler temperatures that would be possible.A car is needed to get around but there are countless beautiful beaches and spots to visit within short distances. The communication and attention to any issues arising was faultless.Thank you for a wonderful place to stay and enjoy Kefalonia.

Fantastic villa in a beautiful little village ☺ The villa was absolutely perfect. We were a group of friends and all had large equal rooms. The villa was incredibly clean and the hosts came to speak to us and gave fantastic recommendations. We had a mid week clean when more complimentary cake was left. Would highly recommend this to anyone. As it says in the description, the road is incredibly narrow and a car bigger than a Clio wouldn't fit. We parked at the bottom of the road by the shops and walked up which wasn't a problem. The village and surrounding area is absolutely stunning!
