Rethymnon Villas
When staying in the region of Rethymnon (Rethimno), it is tempting to simply enjoy the delights of sun, sea and the gently shelving sand that stretches a whole 13 km east from the historic centre of Rethymon, or the pebbly beaches and crystal clear Libyan sea on the South Coast. However, it would be a tragedy not to visit Rethymnon’s charming old town with its appealing tangle of Venetian and Turkish buildings that line its narrow streets.
Eventually you will arrive at the pretty harbour, where tavernas and cafes line the waterfront. Soft hues of the ancient Venetian buildings reflect in splinters of colour between the bobbing fishing boats and when day turns to night, the sea virtually sparkles with light. It’s a must see for guests staying in the Rethmyno area of Crete, – for those holidaying in our villas in Agia Paraskevi above the Libyan Sea, south of Rethymnon, and Vryses & Georgioupolis to the west of the city.
Market day (Laiki) on Thursdays brings another atmosphere to the town, when tourists rub shoulders with locals and taverna owners, making their way to the market square. Here, the aromas of cheese, fish, olives, herbs and spices and the colours of locally grown fruit and vegetables almost overwhelm the senses, tempting the ‘foodie’ to amble along the stalls trying local and sometimes unfamiliar produce. For the souvenir hunter, there is an ample choice of leather goods, clothing and ceramics. Alternatively, if shopping for ingredients while on your villa holiday, there is also an all-organic Farmer’s Market behind the Municipal Gardens on Wednesdays.
