Stylos Villas

There is undoubtedly something very special about Stylos (or Stilos), a peaceful agricultural village situated high above the bustling coast, nestled amidst fertile fields and vibrant orchards. It is surrounded by natural springs and a river meanders through the village, a charming place amongst fragrant orange groves and ancient olive trees.

Once a significant settlement during Minoan times, it is nowadays a working village, where many locals  still continue to live off their land, preserving a way of life that has been passed down through generations. People come here to stay to experience a slower, more tranquil pace of life. Outside the modest council building in the centre of the village, you will often find local men sipping coffee and playing backgammon, while in nearby tavernas and cafés, people relax, enjoy the serene atmosphere, the cool shade and the river’s refreshing ambience.

Stylos & Samonas Travel Guide

A guide to some of our favourite places

The two-aisled Byzantine Church of St. John stands proudly in Stylos, while just a short distance away, the Byzantine church of Panagia Serviotissa can be found within the Monastery of Agios Ioannis. Situated amidst the sprawling orange groves on the road to Megala Chorafia and the ancient site of Aptera, this church is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Crete.

In the courtyard of St. John’s Church, you can view the fossilised remains of the extinct Sirenia Metaxytherium medium (dugong/sea cow), embedded in a marly limestone block. The fossil includes an almost complete, articulated skeleton, although some of it has weathered over time.

The Late Minoan Tholos tomb (14th-13th century BC) between Stylos and Aptera is another interesting site in this area, which used to be a significant Minoan settlement. The site has an unassuming entrance. At the edge of the grove, you’ll find a simple gate secured with a padlock…with the key hanging on a chain right there for you to use. Simply unlock the gate and step inside.

Once inside the grove, the tomb isn’t immediately obvious. To find it, follow the path diagonally to your right through the trees and look for a small, unassuming grass-covered mound. This “hillock” is actually the exterior roof of the ancient stone chamber, preserved under the earth for over 3,000 years. Descend a long, stone-lined walkway (the dromos) that cuts into the earth, leading you directly into the heart of the circular tomb. Standing inside this “beehive” structure, with the sunlight filtering down through the entrance, you may feel a connection to the Late Minoan era that you may not experience at larger, more crowded sites.

  • Aptera

Less than 15 minutes from Stylos, on the hills of Megala Chorafia, you will find the impressive Archeological Site of Aptera, overlooking Souda Bay; a jaw dropping historical site which features – amongst other excavations – a Minoan vaulted tomb, a Roman amphitheater and baths from the 1st and 2nd century, and an imposing 19th century fortress. Built during the Ottoman reign to try and suppress the Cretan revolution, it still stands proudly, dominating the hillside.

In Greek mythology, the ancient city of Aptera (which translates as ‘without wings’), was believed to be the site of the famed singing contest between Sirens and Muses. According to legend, the Sirens, when defeated, shed their feathered wings in sorrow and cast themselves off the cliff into the sea.

Next to the various carefully preserved sites and artefacts around Aptera are QR codes for vistors to scan for detailed information and to explore at their own pace while admiring the dramatic views over the bay.

  • Armeni & Kalives Beach

The village of Armeni (Armenoi) in the Chania region, 10 min drive from Stylos en route to the sandy beaches at Kalives, is notable for its large shady plane trees lining the main street and for being something of a foodies’ paradise. This is where you will find two excellent tavernas and a very well stocked delicatessen with wonderful local cheeses, yoghurt and charcuterie, – perfect to enjoy with the fresh bread that gets delivered first thing every morning to the kafenion on the small triangular central square.

This is another great location for more traditional Cretan holidays within easy reach of the bustling beach town of Kalives. In Kalives, apart from a sandy beach, you will find numerous tavernas and shops, and a lively – almost cosmopolitan – atmosphere that is very different from the tranquil pace of life in your villa in Stylos.

  • Lake Kournas

For a delightful day out, why not take a trip to the idyllic Lake Kournas around 30 min drive away, – the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, surrounded by mountains and lush greenery. This is a true oasis in the middle of the Apokoronas region, where you can take a relaxing dip in the calm, crystal clear water, spot fish and turtles while snorkeling, hire a pedalo (you can even get the ones with slides for the kids), hydrobike or small electric boat or just take a walk around the lake. There are several waterside tavernas serving traditional Greek food and refreshing drinks with lovely views over the lake.

  • Chania Old Town

The focal point of Western Crete is no doubt the charming city of Chania (Hania) with its fascinating old quarters, steeped in history. The bustling covered market and the picturesque Venetian harbour, complete with 19th century lighthouse, as well as the ‘Firka’ fortress and the ‘Kastelli’ citadel, are only some of the highlights.

The now almost completely pedestrianised historic centre is compact, but there is plenty to discover, and dining in one of the many colourful tavernas or soaking up the atmosphere over a drink in the old Venetian harbour, is a truly memorable experience.

From the mid 13th to the mid 17th century, under Venetian occupation, the city of Chania was called ‘La Canea’, it then was named ‘Hanya’ under the Ottomans, who declared it the island’s capital. In 1912, after a lengthy fight against the Turkish rule, Chania joined the Kingdom of Greece. When visiting the beautiful historic centre with its stunning harbour front, the architectural styles of the Ottoman and Venetian reigns are evident. There are several hamams, built around 1645, one of which today houses a restaurant, while the famous ‘Mosque of Hasan Kucuk’ between the harbour and the old arsenals, now hosts exhibitions and events.

The area around Chania’s old town, already inhabited 5,000 years ago, was the site of a Minoan Palace then called Kydonia. In the area of Kastelli Hill, the citadel of Chania harbour, archaeological excavations have discovered ceramic sherds and finds that date from the Neolithic to the Late Minoan period. The site, together with 5 other ‘Minoan Palace Centers’, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2025.

Villa Destination Stylos & Samonas

Stylos (Stilos) has a pretty village centre and a small park with tall plane trees, fountains and ponds around natural springs, little wooden bridges over the river, and a little playground. There are several tavernas and a couple of grocery shops/minimarkets in the centre, and a cafe/patisserie that serves delightful cakes and pastries. These include the famous Bougatsa, a delicious traditional custard pie with orange zest! One of the tavernas puts on live Cretan music events in the summer, when people from many nearby villages come to dance the night away…

Stylos is also where the well known ‘Samaria’ water is bottled from the nearby springs. You can take your own bottles and fill them up at the spring to enjoy at your villa or maybe on a hike along the famous Diktamos Gorge, which starts at Faragi near Stylos.

Just a couple of kilometres inland from Stylos you will find the hamlet of Samonas.  For many the main reason to visit this village (apart from the excellent taverna, which has breathtaking views), is the Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos, which sits in a peaceful location at the bottom of a deep wooded valley. Inside one finds beautiful frescoes dating back to the 13th Century.

You will need to collect the key from Roussa or Kosta, who live in Samonas and happen to be the parents of the owners of our Villa Vigla. You won’t need to go far to find either one of them; the village is only small, so it’s just a matter of asking anyone you meet and they will whistle or call out for them.

Locking doors is unusual around these parts, unless your house, like the church, contains precious frescoes and gold…
Just below the taverna back in Samonas, is the local school, abandoned in 1976, whose door has remained unlocked ever since. To this day the chairs still stand neatly behind the desks, the chalk sits by the blackboard (no graffiti), and the register is still on the desk, undefiled.

Stylos – Villas with Pool in a Rural Setting

Stylos and Samonas are places almost forgotten by modern time, where the locals still tend their vegetable patches and keep their own herd of goats. They continue to do things ‘the old way’, making their own bread, soft mizithra cheese and Glyka tou koutaliou , – fruit preserved in thick syrup and eaten from a long spoon (koutali) with a dollop of homemade yogurt, washed down by a small glass of fiery local raki, and usually enjoyed in the afternoon.

There is just one taverna in the village of Samonas, run by Katina with the occasional help of her sons. After she has welcomed you, seen you settled at your table with a jug of chilled spring water and a basket of her home-made bread, she will tell you what food is available and what she has baked freshly that day (besides her bread). Sit back and enjoy the spectacular views of the White Mountains all the way down to the sea and understand why the taverna’s name translates to ‘The Eagles Nest’.

If you have any questions about our Stylos Villas, please feel free to get in touch! – We are happy to talk about your dream holiday villa!

This villa is highly recommended if you want a premium experience. A beautiful place, private location with incredible views. A car is an absolute necessity as the location is pretty remote. But the drive is so worth it. The whole place enables you to feel relaxed in a place that shouts 5 STAR! We have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful places across Spain, France, Portugal and other parts of Europe, and we can say this Villa is right up there with the very best. We will definitely return in the near future, it really was that good! Communication from the management company was excellent before, during and after our visit. A very nice welcome pack was very much appreciated on arrival, (which is all to scarce these days). Be mindful that WiFi is not fantastic, so don’t expect to be able to stream movies or download films. But that is a very minor issue when on holiday in this truly beautiful place. The easiest 5 stars we’ve ever given.

The location & views are breathtaking. The Villa is clean and there is lots of room both inside and out. We didn’t meet the owner or the agent, but everything ran smoothly and communication was easy and responses were quick. The nearby beaches are spectacular and anyone who enjoys sea swimming is in for a treat. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely time in the villa! Check-in was straightforward, the villa was very clean and we loved the view from the outdoor seating and pool area. The location was great; in close proximity to the village of Spartia, and yet still quiet and private. We also tried one of the local tavernas which we found in the Freelance Villas handbook, which was great, too!

I was simply amazed by Diane, Sylvia and the team in Crete They saved our holiday not once, but twice. Unannounced construction works started right next to the villa we booked, which they quickly resolved by moving us to another villa, all very smoothly. And then we couldn’t blame anyone but ourselves for forgetting to take two things from the house (one of which our passports, which we discovered on the morning of departure!) and without any judgment and with total patience and understanding, they arranged that we could pick those up twice (in case of the passports, at 7.00 in the morning!). In general, they were very responsive whatever the question, whether important or trivial. Information before arrival is perfect; they ensure you have all the info about the accommodation and surroundings you need in a comprehensive guide/app. How they manage their service is just so smart and they are a very service-minded team of people themselves, and I’m entirely grateful to them - and will always book via Freelance Villas on any next trip to Crete!

Such a stunning position with breathtaking views all around! Beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoor space. We were there in the heat of August so it was too hot to walk to the closest village for tavernas and mini mart, but in cooler temperatures that would be possible.A car is needed to get around but there are countless beautiful beaches and spots to visit within short distances. The communication and attention to any issues arising was faultless.Thank you for a wonderful place to stay and enjoy Kefalonia.

Fantastic villa in a beautiful little village ☺ The villa was absolutely perfect. We were a group of friends and all had large equal rooms. The villa was incredibly clean and the hosts came to speak to us and gave fantastic recommendations. We had a mid week clean when more complimentary cake was left. Would highly recommend this to anyone. As it says in the description, the road is incredibly narrow and a car bigger than a Clio wouldn't fit. We parked at the bottom of the road by the shops and walked up which wasn't a problem. The village and surrounding area is absolutely stunning!
