Pollenca Villas

In the rolling foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains in the North of Mallorca, lies the delightful little town of Pollenca (Pollensa), a charming destination, rich in history and tradition and with a vibrant cultural scene to addd to its appeal.

The old town’s narrow streets, historic buildings and beautiful squares attract people from far and wide, – and yet, Pollenca has managed to adapt to visitors without losing its soul. Wandering through the cobbled streets, you will come across many attractive town houses, old churches and modern sculptures. Small art galleries exhibit local artists, and artisan shops sell ceramics, woven baskets, handmade jewellery and popular leather goods produced in the area.

On Sunday mornings, locals and visitors mingle between a huge variety of market stalls on Plaça Major and the little streets surrounding the square, while cafes and restaurants are busy with people enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Indeed a very pleasant way to spend the morning, if you are staying in any of our Pollenca Villas or in our villas in nearby Puerto Pollenca, Alcudia, Cala San Vincenc or Santa Margalida.

Pollenca Villas – Travel Guide

El Calvari

A pause for coffee and pastries is recommended before climbing the tree lined Calvari steps, 365 of them, – one for every day of the year -, but you will be amply rewarded at the summit. Take in the panoramic views over the town and across to the northernmost tip of the island. You will find a viewing platform near the church, the Mirador del Calvari.

During Easter, the steps and the church square on the top of the hill turn into a stage for a moving re-enacting of the crucifixion, and a sombre procession. A wooden figure of Jesus is removed from the cross and carried down the steps by torchlight.

Women dress in black and wear traditional lace veils, while members of religious brotherhoods (cofradías), taking part in Holy Week processions to express penitence, are dressed in ’capirotes’ (tall, pointy, conical hoods), covering their faces. This is intended as a symbolic representation of penance and mortification without seeking personal glory or recognition.

The rather eerie and sinister looking hoods inevitably raise questions, but there is in fact no connection between the 16th century Spanish brotherhoods and the American white supremacist hate organisation. It is believed that their disguise is based on costumes featured in a silent film, which became widely popular in parts of the United States in the early 20th century.

The months of August and September have much to offer music lovers, as Pollenca hosts its annual classical music festival with many concerts performed in the atmospheric Cloister of Sant Domingo de Pollença. Since the first Festival de Pollença, held in 1962 at the initiative of the famous English violinist Philip Newman, more than 800 first-rate artists have performed at this event.

Vall de Pollenca, Mallorca

The old road, through the beautiful Vall de Pollenca winds some 6 miles between the Pollenca Hills and the towering Tramuntana Mountains, connecting the picturesque Old Town of Pollenca with Campanet. These days the road, now surpassed by the faster motorway, is used mostly by cyclists rather than vehicular traffic.

The pretty church square in thes charming village of Campanet is the ideal place for a coffee break, before or after visiting the Coves de Campanet, the amazing nearby limestone caves, said to house the longest stalactite in the world!

Singled out for its beauty by the rich and famous, the hillsides around Pollença are discreetly scattered with luxury properties, amongst them many of our most attractive Pollenca Villas, tucked away and enjoying this unsurpassed location.

Pollenca also makes an excellent starting point for an exhilarating drive to the Santuari de Lluc, the impressive 13th century mountain top monastery.

According to legend, […] “after the conquest of Mallorca (1229), a shepherd boy and a monk who lived in the forest of Lluc discovered a stone image of the Virgin Mary, who appeared at the top of the small mound next to the sanctuary called ‘Pujol de la Trobada’. They picked her up and took her to the parish church in the municipality of Escorca. Miraculously, the Holy Figure disappeared from the place where it had been taken, only to reappear at the site of its first manifestation. […]

The Virgin’s will was to remain in the same place of the miraculous and the locals decided to build a chapel in her honour, the seed of the current sanctuary of Santa Maria de Lluc. […]”

This villa is highly recommended if you want a premium experience. A beautiful place, private location with incredible views. A car is an absolute necessity as the location is pretty remote. But the drive is so worth it. The whole place enables you to feel relaxed in a place that shouts 5 STAR! We have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful places across Spain, France, Portugal and other parts of Europe, and we can say this Villa is right up there with the very best. We will definitely return in the near future, it really was that good! Communication from the management company was excellent before, during and after our visit. A very nice welcome pack was very much appreciated on arrival, (which is all to scarce these days). Be mindful that WiFi is not fantastic, so don’t expect to be able to stream movies or download films. But that is a very minor issue when on holiday in this truly beautiful place. The easiest 5 stars we’ve ever given.

To describe the house as amazing doesn´t feel enough. Such a wonderful view, the pool is great, no close neighbors and the house is nicely renovated. 5 minutes to the sea with car and walking distance to good local restaurants and a mini market. Clean and nice inside. We are a family with two kids and it was plenty of space. Great host, easy to commuicate with and really service minded.

The location & views are breathtaking. The Villa is clean and there is lots of room both inside and out. We didn’t meet the owner or the agent, but everything ran smoothly and communication was easy and responses were quick. The nearby beaches are spectacular and anyone who enjoys sea swimming is in for a treat. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely time in the villa! Check-in was straightforward, the villa was very clean and we loved the view from the outdoor seating and pool area. The location was great; in close proximity to the village of Spartia, and yet still quiet and private. We also tried one of the local tavernas which we found in the Freelance Villas handbook, which was great, too!

I was simply amazed by Diane, Sylvia and the team in Crete They saved our holiday not once, but twice. Unannounced construction works started right next to the villa we booked, which they quickly resolved by moving us to another villa, all very smoothly. And then we couldn’t blame anyone but ourselves for forgetting to take two things from the house (one of which our passports, which we discovered on the morning of departure!) and without any judgment and with total patience and understanding, they arranged that we could pick those up twice (in case of the passports, at 7.00 in the morning!). In general, they were very responsive whatever the question, whether important or trivial. Information before arrival is perfect; they ensure you have all the info about the accommodation and surroundings you need in a comprehensive guide/app. How they manage their service is just so smart and they are a very service-minded team of people themselves, and I’m entirely grateful to them - and will always book via Freelance Villas on any next trip to Crete!

Such a stunning position with breathtaking views all around! Beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoor space. We were there in the heat of August so it was too hot to walk to the closest village for tavernas and mini mart, but in cooler temperatures that would be possible.A car is needed to get around but there are countless beautiful beaches and spots to visit within short distances. The communication and attention to any issues arising was faultless.Thank you for a wonderful place to stay and enjoy Kefalonia.

Fantastic villa in a beautiful little village ☺ The villa was absolutely perfect. We were a group of friends and all had large equal rooms. The villa was incredibly clean and the hosts came to speak to us and gave fantastic recommendations. We had a mid week clean when more complimentary cake was left. Would highly recommend this to anyone. As it says in the description, the road is incredibly narrow and a car bigger than a Clio wouldn't fit. We parked at the bottom of the road by the shops and walked up which wasn't a problem. The village and surrounding area is absolutely stunning!
