Spartia Villas

Our exclusive Spartia Villas are situated in the South of Kefalonia on Cape Liakas, an area of outstanding natural beauty, culminating in dramatic white limestone cliffs that dive into the Ionian sea. Here you find kaleidoscopic shades of blue from the palest turquoise to the deepest cobalt. Our beautiful villas were designed with comfort and privacy in mind and are dotted across the headland, each sat within its own spacious garden with a private pool and spectacular sea views, making our Villas in Spartia the ultimate luxury accommodation in this area of Kefalonia.

Guests at Spartia Villas enjoy easy access to a nearby rock beach, just a short walk downhill. This tranquil oasis consists of a flat rock, doubling as a large sun deck, which extends into the crystal-clear waters at the tip of the peninsula. Here, complimentary sunbeds and shaded areas await our villa clients. It’s an idyllic place to relax, soak up the sun and listen to the waves gently lapping against the rocks. For those looking to explore the deep blue, a sturdy ladder leads into the crystal clear waters, making it the perfect spot for a swim or to don your mask and flippers and discover the fascinating underwater world.

Our favourite places near Spartia Villas

Spartia is nestled in a fertile landscape of lemon trees and olive groves, where the occasional church tower punctuates the skyline and the pine-clad slopes of Mount Ainos serve as a splendid backdrop. A network of winding paths and lanes crisscross the surrounding countryside, offering delightful walks, especially in early and late spring when wildflowers and local herbs paint the scenery in vibrant colours.

As one of the oldest settlements on Kefalonia, Spartia it is mentioned in the minutes of the ‘Episcopate of Kefallinia’ in 1264, but the village is believed to have been founded in antiquity, with its name thought to be derived from the Latin word ‘Spartum’/ancient Greek ‘Sparton’ (rope, cable) describing a wild shrub like plant of which ropes, mats, nets, etc were made. Nowadays known as ‘Spanish Broom’ (Spartium junceum), it is native to the area and much of the southern Mediterranean region.

With its striking white limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters and verdant surroundings, Spartia is a paradise for nature lovers, and the breathtaking views from your villa, coupled with the sound of the waves and the scent of the sea, make for an unforgettable holiday experience.

Our Spartia Villas offer peace, quiet and privacy, thanks to their sheltered location, with no traffic passing through the peninsula. Despite this tranquil setting, they are ideally situated for exploring the whole of Kefalonia. Whether you are looking for other scenic beaches, would like to visit historic sites, natural attractions, traditional villages or are seeking exciting adventures, everything you need is within reach. Why not start by checking out the beautiful beaches along the south coast and a visit to nearby Argostoli, the vibrant capital of the island.

Argostoli is a charming town just 15 minutes drive from our Spartia Villas. Set on a deep inlet, the waterfront promenade along the lagoon and the harbour is perfect for a leisurely stroll, whether before or after enjoying a meal at one of the excellent local tavernas. In the mornings, when the fresh fish are brought in, you might be able spot the famous local turtles, some of them measuring as much as a metre in size, and if you are lucky, they will surface, eager to snack on discarded bits of seafood that the local fishermen cast off the boats for them.

Standing tall on a hill above Spartia and approx. 15 min drive from our Spartia Villas, is the ‘Kastro’, the Castle of Agios Georgios, a Byzantine fort built on the site of the old Agios Georgios church. The Byzantine fort was expanded and became the administration and military centre for the western rulers who controlled the island from 1185-1435.

After the Ottomans’ two brief occupations between 1479 and 1500, the Venetians conquered the castle after a 3-month siege that caused significant damage. The reconstruction of the castle began in 1504 and was completed by 1594, consequently the ‘Kastro’ developed into a thriving settlement, eventually spilling outside the castle walls, into what became known as the “Borgo” district, with the Church of the Evangelistria at Kastro. This church, dating to 1580, is a remarkable example of a Ionian Baroque basilica, which is worth visiting during your holiday in Spartia.

Despite the damage inflicted to the Kastro during World War II by the British Protectorate, and by the devastating earthquake of 1953, the castle remains a significant work of fortification architecture and a testament to Kefalonia’s history. Within the ruined walls, you can find remnants of the Chapel of Panagia of the Guard, the Catholic Church of San Marco, the Church of San Nicolo, the governor’s house, barracks, cisterns, warehouses, and a gunpowder magazine.

South East Kefalonia: Skala
is one of Kefalonia’s much loved seaside destinations, known for its long sandy beach with calm clear waters, ideal for swimming and water sports. The village is well-equipped with a good selection of restaurants, cafes, gelaterias and a handful of bars and shops. It’s a great mix for families with kids and teenagers, and for people looking for a lively, yet laid-back holiday atmosphere rather than clubs and partying. There are also interesting Roman and Greek ruins to explore in and around Skala.

The island’s East Coast: Sami, located on the island’s eastern coast, is a picturesque village at the sea and is known as the gateway to the famous Melissani Cave, which is a must-see when in Kefalonia. Nearby, the ancient ruins of the city of Sami, with a well-preserved theatre, and the archaeological site of the Temple of Zeus are also worth a visit. Sami itself is charming, with its small harbour, traditional tavernas and relaxing vibe.

The South of Kefalonia: Lourdas (Lourdata) is a tranquil village situated on the slopes of Mount Ainos, offering stunning panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. The village is renowned for its lush greenery, traditional stone houses and its peaceful atmosphere. It has a small, but lovely beach, perfect for a quiet day of sunbathing or swimming. Lourdas is ideal for nature lovers and hikers, with several walking trails leading up to the mountain.

Our Sea View Villas in Spartia

Take your pick from our wonderful selection of luxurious villas with panoramic views!

Our Villas in Spartia are located approx. 2.5 km from the charming village, which is surrounded by verdant countryside and offers a taste of traditional Greek life. The village remains relatively unassuming and is well off the beaten track for most tourists on the island. Those who do visit, will find a nice little village square, a pretty church with a bell tower, several little chapels, a few traditional white washed village houses and a couple of tavernas and mini-markets. For additional dining options, more tavernas are situated just a short drive from our Spartia Villas, including the popular Taverna Eleònas.

In the cooler season, walking to the village takes about 30-40 minutes. While it’s a pleasant hike from our Spartia Villas higher up, it is worth noting that the walk is quite steep from the villas situated lower down on the hillside and nearer the sea, and therefore probably best avoided during the hot summer months. Around 2 km downhill from the village of Spartia is the fishing jetty, where you will find a couple of small sandy beaches, one either side of it, and three tavernas. It’s a great spot for a swim and with its shallow waters it is perfect for families with children.

The Waterway taverna, perched at the top of the beach, is a local landmark, it has wonderful sea views from its terraces cascading down the bank. This is also the location of the little church of Agios (St.) Nikolaos in Klimatsia, whose feast day falls on May 10th. Expect celebrations with a religious service, food and dance for all the family.

You will find a video of the area and can explore all of our Spartia Villas here.
If you need any advice on choosing the perfect villa for your holiday, please feel free to call or message us. We know each of our Spartia villas intimately and have stayed in many of them with our own families and friends.

This villa is highly recommended if you want a premium experience. A beautiful place, private location with incredible views. A car is an absolute necessity as the location is pretty remote. But the drive is so worth it. The whole place enables you to feel relaxed in a place that shouts 5 STAR! We have been lucky enough to stay in some beautiful places across Spain, France, Portugal and other parts of Europe, and we can say this Villa is right up there with the very best. We will definitely return in the near future, it really was that good! Communication from the management company was excellent before, during and after our visit. A very nice welcome pack was very much appreciated on arrival, (which is all to scarce these days). Be mindful that WiFi is not fantastic, so don’t expect to be able to stream movies or download films. But that is a very minor issue when on holiday in this truly beautiful place. The easiest 5 stars we’ve ever given.

To describe the house as amazing doesn´t feel enough. Such a wonderful view, the pool is great, no close neighbors and the house is nicely renovated. 5 minutes to the sea with car and walking distance to good local restaurants and a mini market. Clean and nice inside. We are a family with two kids and it was plenty of space. Great host, easy to commuicate with and really service minded.

The location & views are breathtaking. The Villa is clean and there is lots of room both inside and out. We didn’t meet the owner or the agent, but everything ran smoothly and communication was easy and responses were quick. The nearby beaches are spectacular and anyone who enjoys sea swimming is in for a treat. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely time in the villa! Check-in was straightforward, the villa was very clean and we loved the view from the outdoor seating and pool area. The location was great; in close proximity to the village of Spartia, and yet still quiet and private. We also tried one of the local tavernas which we found in the Freelance Villas handbook, which was great, too!

I was simply amazed by Diane, Sylvia and the team in Crete They saved our holiday not once, but twice. Unannounced construction works started right next to the villa we booked, which they quickly resolved by moving us to another villa, all very smoothly. And then we couldn’t blame anyone but ourselves for forgetting to take two things from the house (one of which our passports, which we discovered on the morning of departure!) and without any judgment and with total patience and understanding, they arranged that we could pick those up twice (in case of the passports, at 7.00 in the morning!). In general, they were very responsive whatever the question, whether important or trivial. Information before arrival is perfect; they ensure you have all the info about the accommodation and surroundings you need in a comprehensive guide/app. How they manage their service is just so smart and they are a very service-minded team of people themselves, and I’m entirely grateful to them - and will always book via Freelance Villas on any next trip to Crete!

Such a stunning position with breathtaking views all around! Beautiful spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoor space. We were there in the heat of August so it was too hot to walk to the closest village for tavernas and mini mart, but in cooler temperatures that would be possible.A car is needed to get around but there are countless beautiful beaches and spots to visit within short distances. The communication and attention to any issues arising was faultless.Thank you for a wonderful place to stay and enjoy Kefalonia.

Fantastic villa in a beautiful little village ☺ The villa was absolutely perfect. We were a group of friends and all had large equal rooms. The villa was incredibly clean and the hosts came to speak to us and gave fantastic recommendations. We had a mid week clean when more complimentary cake was left. Would highly recommend this to anyone. As it says in the description, the road is incredibly narrow and a car bigger than a Clio wouldn't fit. We parked at the bottom of the road by the shops and walked up which wasn't a problem. The village and surrounding area is absolutely stunning!
